The Heads of State and Government attending the General Assembly debate of the UN were called today by the Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, to participate in a panel on strengthening measures to prevent nuclear material or other substances radioactive fall into terrorist hands
During the meeting, the General Assembly president, Vuk Jeremic, said the threat of terrorist access to obtain nuclear weapons is truly terrifying and noted that the consequences of such a possibility could be dramatic.
The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, said that while much has been done in recent years to contain this threat, we must move more.
He added that the primary responsibility for ensuring nuclear safety lies with the national governments and urged them to implement the guidelines on the subject issued by the IAEA.
Meanwhile, the head of the UN said that should strengthen the ability of States to prevent proliferation and that the UN is determined to better respond to national needs.
